G�teborg: Fire catastrophe October, 29 1998
At 11.45 P.M. in the night to the 29 October 1998 an alert came to
the Rescue Services about a fire in party premises in Hisingen,
Gothenburg, where a youth disco took place. The fire had a very
quick course of events, panic occurred in the premises. the Rescue
Services and the Hospital Authorities estimate that approximately
180 persons were injured and 63 deceased.
The first rescue force vas in place at 11.47 P.M., a little while later
50 fire men had arrived. The fire was under control after
approximately three hours. About 15 ambulances brought the
injured persons to the Sahlgrenska, �stra, M�lndal and Kung�lv
hospitals. The patients injuries at mostly burn and smoke injuries.
After having been taken care of at first, seven patients have later on
been transported by helicopter to other hospitals in Sweden.
The cause of the fire is not y et known, a preliminary investigation
and a technical investigation is going on.
The City of Gothenburg has established crisis watches in every part
of the city, at the hospitals there are groups for psycho social care
taking.
In Gothenburg, all theatre shows and other shows in the city's
premises are cancelled due to the tragic event.
